Master Your Interview With These 4 Preparation Tips

Being a recent college graduate and moving across the country from Miami to Los Angeles without a job lined up was the biggest career risk I’ve taken to date. All I had was a goal, to obtain a job in the field of writing or entertainment. After applying to countless positions both within and outside of these respected fields, I managed to land two job interviews. One position fell within range of my expertise, customer service, and the other was in the entertainment field, specifically casting. Spoiler alert! I was offered both jobs, and I want to share with you my recipe as to how I get through the interviewing process.

The key ingredients are: be comfortable (this will give you confidence), be happy (you’re never fully dressed without a smile) and be yourself. This may seem impossible because the entire process can be intimidating, but when you’re prepared you’ll be able to relax. Now with your ingredients you’ll have to follow the instructions listed below in order to achieve your best result, a.k.a. landing the job.

1. Do your research and study for it!

Believe me once I graduated I was thrilled that I would never study again, but when it’s for something you really want it’s fun!

Studying for a job entails learning about the company, learning about the person(s) who will be interviewing you and learning about the position. The latter is probably the most important thing to look into; even before applying to the position because you want to know what you’ll be earning aside from a paycheck. It’s a given to know your salary, but you should also look into the average number of weekly hours required for the position and if there is room for growth. We’re blessed to have the power of Google and LinkedIn which can supply us with all this information and then sum! With this knowledge, you’ll be confident when going into the interview and you’ll score brownie points when you’re prepared to ask questions to the interviewer. Remember flattery isn’t dead, so knowing some facts about your interviewer and posing questions will always impress and show how much you value the individual and the company.

2. Review your qualifications

Think of the awards, recognitions you’ve received, promotions and previous experiences that are applicable to the position.

Now, I started working the week after I turned sixteen so I have a great deal of experience, which came in handy when apply to both of these positions. For the casting job, I applied previous experiences of my role in sales and my academic knowledge of communications to land the gig. When I interviewed for the customer service job I boasted about the promotions and titles I received, which made me a favorable candidate. As for those of us who haven’t had any job experience, but have still managed to snag an interviewee spot that’s an accomplishment! So talk about your academics studies, the group projects you were the leader of, your responsibilities in the clubs or organizations you were apart of, the meetings or gathering you held. There is a reason you’re sitting in the interviewee seat, and this should give you an additional boost of confidence!

3. Get a sufficient amount of sleep

I was torn between making studying or sleep the first step, but if you want a solid nights rest it’s best to be prepared first.

It’s crucial to clock sufficient amount of hours of sleep before an interview. I’ve had plenty of restless nights myself because my anxiety got the best of me, but there is always a remedy. Some of my personal favorites are: exercising before bed, reading, meditating and practicing slow and rhythmic breathing exercises.

4. Eat something healthy

Another crucial step in the recipe for a successful interview is to eat! It’s important to eat something before you step into that interviewing room and it’s best that it’s nourishing and not something like french fries (I won’t judge though, because french fries are magical). Side note: if you suffer from anxiety like I do, and you can’t stomach the thought of food, eat something basic; a banana, almonds or yogurt.

The final touches of the recipe is to remember that you’ve gotten through the toughest part, applying and getting a call back. Just remember throughout your interview you’re more than qualified and being comfortable, happy and yourself is going to get you the job.

Follow Your Dreams: Some Words of Advice for the Passionate

4 Mins read
August 16, 2016

Photo Credit: @Bhampton There are many sayings that elude to the fact that if your passion and gifts live on throughout your life, it means that the child in you survived. If you have managed to keep the child that loves to paint, craft, write, sing and compose, build or whatever is your chocolate thriving and jumping for joy. Cyber fist bump for you. I love seeing people take the next step and moving it from the “happy” place to the only place. No doubt the realities of the world and maintaining independence within it can chip away at the things you do well and enjoy. Figuratively speaking it appears as a cloud that lingers over us that we believe rains “reality.” Between the light bill due three days before your next payday. The shoes that are wearing out on your baby’s feet and the many demands of your boss who needs you to be three steps in front of and behind them at the same time. Nothing is more real than what comes natural to you and makes you the best version of yourself. If you have figured out that much now it is about making the shift. Letting that passion seep all the way through, whether all at once or in controlled doses. Regardless of how you begin to apply it, it is a tidal wave approaching shore and ready to wash away the mundane and familiar. You’re starting over. Now the task becomes building and all you have is what that passion has brought in and it\’s fair to say. You better get ready. Pursuing a dream, making goals around it and playing it out is a challenge that promises to teach you more about yourself then conceivable in a short amount of time. Some of this new found knowledge is encouraging but the work is dealing with the uglier traits exposed. I decided to go for my writing. It all started when I was asked something I never have been asked before. “What’s your story?” At the time it was like a whirlwind of information and I had to ask myself what part of this story of mine best defines me? My kids are a given but beyond that. I didn’t know this person well, but if I could share who I was… what story would I tell? From there, I started to read and stir in my thoughts. Soon after that, I began to pick up the pen again and think about my story. I read Stephen King’s On Writing: A Memoir of the craft. True to King’s reputation, (he is one of my favorites) I was immediately drawn in and soaking up the story behind all his stories. Fast forward a few months later and I was in a writing class. Moving steadily toward clarifying my own story. Sorting things out. Flexing this muscle and cultivating a change. I found myself for the first time actually reading the street signs along the road that I was always meant to go down. I began to think harder about not only what my story was, but what I wanted it to be. It was revolutionary for me because all revolution begins first in the mind. However, it also exposed my time management ADD, my over commitment issues without strategy and tendency to twist my brain into knots over analyzing what comes next. So in that moment on the road I had been so elated to discover, I remembered another favorite of mine. Dr. Suess in all his glory says You will come to a place where the streets are not marked. Some windows are lighted. But mostly they\’re darked. I am currently in the mode of learning to stop the room from spinning and making a mental note of what peace feels like. Book marking it so I can pull it out anytime I want….ideally. I believe it can be done and seek counsel from those that have it mastered. It’s hard and it takes time. That peace keeps the passion focused. We can become our own worst critic. Tripping ourselves up expecting what is new to always come together as we first envision. In the back of our heads we know better, but the in forefront of our minds we want gratification after we have worked for a result…on our time. Passion misdirected by impatience. It is a waste and easy to fall into but as King reminds us in On Writing Life is not a support for art, it is the other way around. I have acquired a piece of this knowledge and it grows through the trails and the racing thoughts that come to me through the tidal waves of passion. I still have much to learn between the To Do lists and the stack projects next to my bed. What is clear to me is the baby steps that you take on your way are enough for your goals to propel you into flight. Give yourself credit for having the fortitude to step out. Take the time to find peace. Hog tie and drag it home with you if necessary. Keep a running tab of all your accomplishments since you began to move on your dream so that when you are ready to close the laptop and curse it (guilty) you can remember you took a step and through that step a desired result was achieved. Your sleep pattern may suffer, your social life might change. You might drink a bit more than usual.  It is not going to be perfect. Nonetheless you planted a seed.  Recognize and embrace your seasons and focus on the passion that you are prepared to reap. Subscribe Sign up with your email address to receive news and updates. Declutter Your Space in and Regain Your Strength

2 Mins read
December 3, 2016

Over last year I’ve adopted tendencies of a minimalist, which helped when I moved across the country, but I wish I would have started a lot sooner. Now, I wouldn’t call myself a hoarder, but I have this habit of holding onto things because they carry sentimental value or I think that I may want it on a rainy day. It wasn’t easy to adopt this new way of life, but I wanted to see how I could benefit from it. I started with the purging of clothes and shoes. I got rid of everything I hadn’t worn within the last three years (this was the best I could do at the time). Next, I got rid of just stuff: books, old birthday cards, school work, electronics, old products, dried out highlighters, ink-less pens and paperwork. Once I finished my cleansing, I began to analyze the areas of my life that have improved. My Conscious Donating all of your unwanted things is just the start of regaining your strength. We all want to help others and this is by far the simplest way of doing so. You’ll have the choice of donating directly to a shelter or an establishment such as Good Will. There\’s consignment stores, but I suggest avoiding that option because you’ll be enticed to buy things which is the opposite of minimalism. Organization I like to think of myself as an organized individual (at times). Now having less around makes it easier to keep my room clean for one! This has also trickled down to other areas of my life. I was able to stay on top of appointments and my overall organization skills strengthened and stretched in both my professional and personal life. Distractions I had less distractions all together. It’s enough that social media is a distraction at any second of the day, having less around me, allows me to pay more attention to things of great importance (like blogging for MBB)! Improved Health Having clean and decluttered space will improve your overall mental and physical health. You’ll start by clearing out your space, next you’ll want to start eating cleaner (no more junk food, meats or excessive eating) and you’ll improve your cognitive thinking. It has been a challenge keeping up with this new way of life, but it’s also helped me learn what I truly value in my life. Family, friends and my career have received greater attention than ever before. I know it seems nuts and how could this really make a difference, but I dare you to try it! Start off slow, just clearing out a drawer or a shelf. Once you start you’ll only want to clear out more space and before you know it you’re on your way to improving your way of life exponentially!
